Dark Mode & Settings

BigBlueButton offers a range of personal settings including Dark Mode, interface language, font size, and notification preferences. All of these settings apply only to your own view and do not affect other participants.

Dark Mode and personal settings are available starting with BigBlueButton version 2.6 and later.

Dark Mode

Dark Mode switches the BigBlueButton interface to a dark color scheme. This reduces eye strain in low-light environments and can also save battery on devices with OLED screens.

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the BigBlueButton interface.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. Find the Dark Mode toggle and switch it on.
  4. The interface will immediately switch to the dark color scheme. Toggle the switch off to return to the light theme.

Dark Mode only changes your own view. Other participants will not be affected by your display preference.

Interface Language

BigBlueButton supports multiple languages for its user interface. The default language is typically determined by your browser settings or the server configuration.

  1. Open the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Look for the language selector and choose your preferred language from the dropdown.
  4. The interface will update immediately to display labels, buttons, and menus in the selected language.

Font Size

The font size in BigBlueButton is preconfigured by the server. Depending on the server configuration, you may be able to adjust the font size in the personal settings.

Font size adjustments may be restricted by the server administrator. If you cannot find a font size option in your settings, the server does not allow individual changes.

Notification Settings

BigBlueButton allows you to configure notifications for various events during a session. By default, most notifications are disabled.

Chat Notifications

You can enable audio alerts and popup notifications for new chat messages. This is especially useful if you have the chat panel minimized or hidden.

Raise Hand Notifications

Moderator Raise hand notifications are particularly important for moderators. When enabled, you will receive an audio alert and/or popup when a participant raises their hand.

To configure notifications:

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  2. Navigate to Settings and then to the Notifications tab.
  3. Toggle the switches for the notification types you want to enable or disable.
  4. Close the settings dialog. Your notification preferences are applied immediately.

No. Dark Mode is a personal display preference that only changes your own interface. Other participants will continue to see their own chosen theme.

Dark Mode was introduced in BigBlueButton version 2.6. If you are using an older version, this feature may not be available.

Font size adjustments may be restricted by the server administrator. Contact your server administrator if you need a different font size configuration.

Go to the three-dot menu, open Settings, navigate to the Notifications tab, and enable the raise hand notification toggle. This is especially recommended for moderators managing larger sessions.
